More on Digidesign G5/10.3 Compatibility

Music Software : More on Digidesign G5/10.3 Compatibility - macmusicWell, the good news is, Digidesign is starting, slowly, to certify Power Mac G5 systems -- the bad news being, the process is slow and Panther compatibility seems far behind, as clouvel has observed. Clouvel is obviously upset and with reason, but I do want to add a few points:

The 001 is incompatible with the Power Mac G5 because of physical incompatibilities with the G5's 3.3 volt-signaling restriction, which does not allow the 001's 5 volt signaling. (See the website below). But the news here is actually even worse: d24 and farm cards from Pro Tools|24 systems are incompatible, as are Pro Tools|24 MIX I/O (not to be confused with MIX Core or MIX Farm). Audiomedia III and SCSI|64 Kit cards are also incompatible, although that's not likely to cause any shed tears.

Meanwhile, Digidesign is not saying they're not supporting Panther; 10.3 compatible is TBD and given that this announcement says "dependent on Apple release timeframe," my guess is this announcement is a little old.

Check out the full Digidesign announcement below: life with Digi hardware is complicated, so worth a careful read. While I'm not feeling exactly the despair clouvel is, I do think that the ongoing complexity of supporting Digidesign systems will continue to drive many users to native environments (Nuendo, Cubase, Logic, DP) using hardware that's more compatible (MOTU, MAudio, Metric Halo, etc.). Sure, a MOTU system is a far cry from an extensive TDM-based studio, but you can get work done on it, and if you're running a MOTU system, last night you could've fired up a new G5, and enjoyed full G5 optimization, AU and VST (via wrapper) support, with an 896 interface, on OS X 10.3.

Those with the big TDM systems have learned to cultivate patience, of course, and with that kind of investment and mission-critical operations probably didn't run out to buy the new version of 10.3 anyway. If you're one of those people, see Digidesign's road map below.
