HowTo: Software

You can help MacMusic to maintain its software database by adding missing software, or by updating existing ones. If you are a software developper, please go there.
Structure
For more convenience, the software pages are divided in two parts, a Software part, and a Version part. Let?s have a look to these two parts, for example in the Autotune page :
The Software part contains the main informations : software's name, editor's name, software's description.

Below, the Version part contains all the versions available for a specific software : operating system, plug-in formats (VST, RTAS, TDM), and of course the release history. The download links appear also in this part, since they may be different from a version to another.

When you add a software, first, you have to enter the Software part, then you add as many version as needed: for most software, you will add one version only. In case of a plug-in or a virtual instrument, you can add several versions for the different formats available.

Let's see now in details how to enter or update a software in the database.

    Step 1
All begins with the Submit software link in the software section of MacMusic.

You are invited to fill in the search field with the name of the software you want to add or update. If the software is already included in the database, you can update it by the link "New Version ?" located near its name. Then, you directly go to the step 3.

If the software is missing, you click on the link "Add a new software".
      Step 2 : Add a software
Note that if you speak french, you can use the bilingual form in order to enter directly the software in both languages of MacMusic.

The form contains differents fields to fill:

      • Developer: The software manufacturer's name. If its name doesn't appear in the list, select "not yet listed".

      • Name: the name of the software

      • Category: Select the appropriate category from the scroll menu.

      • Product page URL: Please write the direct address of the software page (and not the Developer's homepage). Thanks to check the right format: http://Name of the site/soft page/

      • Short summary: In a few words, write a simple description of the software's purpose. For instance, "Universal audio editor with linear inversion of micro-phasing"...try to be as clear and short as possible...

      • Full description: Please try to be comprehensible, concise and complete !!! Include information on technical and music functionalities, but please omit any commercial and marketing waffle. You may wish to simply copy and paste the original description from the developer.

      • Screenshot: Please try to capture a picture that illustrates your work (it's not necessary to include a picture of yourself...). Two solutions to help you :

        - on the developer's site, control click (or long click) on a picture and choose "Download Image to Disk" in the pop up menu

        - If you get the software on your own computer, it would be helpful to capture a selected screen shot. For example, in mac OSX 10.2 and later, use Apple+Shift+4 and draw the selection with the crosshairs.

The picture can be in .gif, .jpg, or .png formats.

The second step is now over, you can click on the 'Send' button and go to the third (and last!) step.
        Step 3 : Add a Version
The form contains several fields to fill in. Note that if you speak french, you can use the bilingual form in order to enter directly the software in both languages of MacMusic.

        • Version: e.g., 5.2

        • Format: ?Standalone application? (for most software), or Audio Unit, MOTU (or MAS), RTAS, TDM and VST in case of a plug-in or a virtual instrument.

        • Compatibility:
          - Mac OS 9.x: Software which works exclusively with Mac OS 9.x or with Classic on Mac OS X
          - Mac OS 9/X (carbon): Software which works on both OS9 and OSX.
          - Mac OS X: Software which works exclusively with Mac OS X on ppc.
          - Mac UniversalBinary: Software which works with Mac OSX on ppc or intel.
          - Mac Intel: Software which works with Mac OSX on intel only.
          - Windows XP : Software for Windows XP.
          - Windows Vista : Software for Windows Vista.

        • Licence:
          - beta: if the soft is still in its testing period and not finalized.
          - Freeware: if it's free.
          - Shareware: if a monetary contribution is required (after a testing period).
          - Commercial update (free): from a commercial and important company.
          - Commercial upgrade/new product: For a new software version or an upgrade that requires payment.

        • Direct download URL: In this field, write the correct address where users may download the software (or simply copy and paste the link here).

        • Size: Careful, we're not talking of your personal size ! This is just the size of the software, e.g. 2.3 MB = 2300 KB

        • Demo URL: simply write or copy/paste the link using the address of the demo version (if available).

        • What's new: List all the new features of the new release ; skip a line for each one.

        • Requirements: This information includes the minimum configuration required to run the software, e.g. OS xx, Mac G3/G4..., Speed (400 Mhz, 1Ghz...), RAM (256 MB, 1GB...) and interfaces (MIDI interface, audio interface...)

And now, You just have to click on 'Send'

To add another version (for a multi-format plug-in for example), use the link 'Add a new version of this software?' in order to redo the step 3 as many times as needed.

As a final step, we need to validate your work. Then the chief editor will check it out and put it online as fast as possible!
