Voice effect

Sonic Charge Bitspeek is a real-time pitch-excited linear prediction codec effect. Right now you are probably thinking, "oh, another one of those"? Or perhaps not. Chances are that you have never heard about "linear prediction", although most of us use it daily when we talk on our cell phones. Linear prediction coding is a voice compression technology that appeared in commercial products in the seventies and was implemented in some well-known speaking toys of the early eighties.

We have applied this technology to create a VST / AU effect plug-in that analyzes audio, extracts a number of parameters (including pitch, volume and formant data) and then resynthesizes the audio using a simple oscillator, noise and filter architecture.

We have added a number of playback parameters that adjusts the pitch and tonal quality of the sound as well as support for MIDI and a beat-synchronized "formant freezing effect". Despite having only a few simple controls, this box can produce a broad range of sounds from cheap speaking toys to high-end vocoder and talkbox effects.

Bitspeek 1.5 comes with the improved audio engine that is used in the Rack Extensions version. This means a vastly improved volume envelope tracker and true support for stereo input / output. ("Legacy mode" is available for backwards compatibility or if you just want Bitspeek to sound worse.) We have also added the frequently requested dry / wet mix knob (with proper latency compensation) as well as the standard set of "convenience features" that you can find in most of our products (copy / paste, undo / redo etc). If you don't own Bitspeek yet you can now try version 1.5 for three weeks with full functionality.

We have just uploaded a minor but important upgrade to Bitspeek. It is minor because it brings no new features to the table, but it is important because:

1) It is our first venture into the great wild yonder of 64-bit.

2) It makes Bitspeek compatible with a bunch of hosts that will not play nicely, or not at all with monophonic plug-ins, e.g. GarageBand and Sonar.

To clarify the latter point, Bitspeek 1.0.2 still runs monaural processing under the hood but it is configured for stereo I/O and will simply mix the two input channels and produce identical output for left and right channels. This is an unfortunate necessity in order to improve compatibility.

There is also a slight name change on the Windows DLL from BitspeekVST.dll to Bitspeek.dll.

We have made thorough tests with all major hosts to assure that these changes will not cause any problems when you upgrade, but there are some minor exceptions. Notably, in Reaper you will need to reconfigure the plug-in outputs if you open projects created with Bitspeek 1.0, and in FL Studio you will need to replace the plug-in due to the .dll name change.
