Roger Linn has announced the AdrenaLinn II. It's easiest to just say that the new model has more of everything offered in the original AdrenaLinn. The new Adrenalinn II is $495, while an upgrade for AdrenaLinn I owners is available through Roger Linn's online store for only US$99 US/Canada; $135 for Europe. (We should tell Roger that the UK is in Europe regarding this line on the online shop).
Ed: Thanks, lpm. For those of you not familiar with the AdrenaLinn, it's a hardware effects processor for keyboards, bass, and guitars, with beat-synced filter effects, amp modeling, and a built-in drum machine. And yes, the new version has, well, more of what the first one had. -PK
Arkaos VJ, the live performance video art / VJ software, has added numerous features in a free 3.0.1 upgrade. (Sounds like at least a "3.1" to me!) The upgrade features enhanced Velocity Engine optimization for Blitters, Filters, and Infinite Zoom, plus multiple language support with Spanish, Italian, German, and, yes, French! Most interesting, though, is a new ASCII art / pixelization effect. (Yes, you heard that right: ASCII text art effects! That's got to be worth at least a version 3.1.)
Tascam has made another completely mad product: the SX-1 LE, a limited (hey, Digi, look what others call limited) version of the SX-1, their all-in-one DAW production engine.
This new version brings a lift to the cosmetic and functional side of the program's interface. This software is constantly evolving. Anyone interested in sequencing and fine-tuned loops should have a go at it.
From our friends from EX5T, we learn that if you are the lucky owner of an Evolver, the new OS 1.5 in beta will be available to the public for testing. The beta is backward compatible, so no changes to old patches already in the beast.
Also, Dave Smith has made it quasi-official that he is working on a new polysynth. Admirers of Prophet 5s, VSs and other Wavestations will be in paradise :)
Native Instruments has released an update to Absynth 2 that allows Absynth to be used as an AU plug-in, enabling multiple instances and automation, along with all the usual features of the Absynth instrument. While compatible with Logic 5.51 and 6.X and Metro, the software is currently incompatible with MOTU DP 4.1; Native says it's working with MOTU on a fix.
MacFixIt has been following compatibility issues with M-Audio's M-Revolution PCI cards. Today they report M-Audio has released new 1.2.7 drivers that add G5 support under OS X 10.2.7, OS X 10.3 (Panther) support, and 4.0/5.0 audio mode support.
Since you passed by the Mac Music stand at the Apple Expo 2003, a very charming song has been stuck into your head. You dream of it every night, you whistle it all day, in the shower, while shopping, at work...
For those of you who didn't come to the AE 2003, it's the fabulous song composed and played by our two friends Soif and Nolot used in their demos. (You should have seen the audience singing "MacMusic" with them! Ha!)
This masterpiece, halfway between James Brown and "Tenue de soirée," is now available freely on the MacMusic website to satisfy all the fans and interest anyone curious.
It's the moment many of us have been waiting for: Mac OS X support for Pluggo, Cycling `74's superb and massive collection of Max/MSP-based audio plugins. AU support, too. This should also mean some more robust OS X support in Max/MSP. Cycling `74 will show off Pluggo for OS X at the AES (Audio Engineering Society) show here in New York, home city of MacMusic's English Editor-in-Chief, yours truly. So expect a full interview with Cycling `74 about this eagerly-anticipated software.
At last after months of reworking (it was in preview under the disguise of a 1U rack at Frankfurt Musikmesse 03), Vermona has released the Retroverb at last. Retroverb is a stereo analogue spring reverb for vintage addicts. Among the features are an EQ, VCF, VCA, Envelope, all switchable on/off. Lots of pots (13), switches (4) and I/O behind with pedals ins (all 1/4" jack plugs). General look is retro 60's minded in a sturdy grey metal box with wood sides. There's also a Crash button to … crash on the springs! :)))
Vermona is the German manufacturer of analogue synths like the MARS and Perfourmer. For GB distributors, take a look at the Vermona site. Price TBA.
One of our favorite Mac shareware developers is back with some huge updates to their popular audio routing and recording software.
Audio Hijack 2 is the biggest update yet to Rogue's popular audio recording tool. The upgrade is free for Pro owners or 1.65 users, and adds an entirely new interface with a new toolbar featuring built-in level meters, improved timed recording, built in Excitifer audio sweetening, post-processing options for recordings via AppleScript (like instant save to iTunes AAC), direct URL entering, automatic preset saving, dock menu, and more. You can use the software to automatically record radio programs, use any application as an alarm clock, and automatically process recordings ...
Ohm Force announced the launch of Melohman, the new cutting-edge set of technologies developed by Ohm Force to improve the global playing experience that a musician can get with any virtual instrument. It relies on a few original concepts. First, a user-defined octave on the keyboard, that can be used for exotic pleasures such as preset morphing, randomisation and various grouped parameter modulations, depending on the instrument. Secondly, exhaustive MIDI matrixes with adjustable response curve. Thirdly, there is a user-friendly interface that allows you to take advantage of the global concept at a glance.
The first Melohman instrument will be the Quad Frohmage Melohman and will be released in October. It is an innovative synth based on a unique synthesis type called SyncGrain, a built ...
Ed: While the best advice may be to steer clear and avoid potential bugs (see our earlier story), here's the latest on 10.2.8 for your information. -PK
Mac OS 10.2.8 system update is available through System Update or on the download page of the Apple web site.
These are some of the enhancements that are a part of the Mac OS X 10.2.8 Update: Audio, BlueTooth, Classic, support for USB and Fire Wire devices, etc. This update works only with Power Mac G3- and G4-based desktop and portable computers, including iMac, eMac, and iBook. This update does not work with Power Mac G5 computers.
Interesting to find out what audio improvements have been made, but Apple tends not to go into details. Thanks, clouvel! -PK
Our friends from Macbidouille (sorry in French) are emiting a warning against the 10.2.8 update for OSX for G3 and G4.
- Stuffit 8 seems to give a kernel panic
- Some Ethernet ports don't work
- Some preferences get corrupted
- Some OpenGL games can't be payed with
- Some computers don't want to restart
According to many, the MacMusic stand at the Apple Expo was a great success. Ours was the biggest stand in the whole music village. The demos were very popular. We even managed to get people to sing "MacMusic" so that the whole neighbourhood knows the song by heart. ;-)
Apple seemed to appreciate our presence, as the MacMusic stand is among the official photos.
On the other hand, the MacMusic party didn't do as well, with only half of the registered visitors present. But the best ones were all there and we stayed up late...
We would like to thank our partners, as well as ...

In about 3 weeks, Macally will release a horde of new products, as previewed at AE2003:
- Need a massage? There's a vibrating mouse that's not the best mouse but massages the palm of your hand very well. It goes brrrrrr!
- Now if you don't like mice, a mini graphic tablet, the IceCad, is coming too. It's really small (it can rest in your hand), and features 1024 levels of pressure, 2 ways to click, absolute positioning, and more. I tried it (quickly, but I'm a daily A5 Wacom user) on the stand, and it worked ok (using Apple default driver) either in the Finder or in Ableton Live. With about a 5.5 by 7.3 cm active area, it's perfect for crowded environements or on the move. 49$
- If you need a small USB microphone, there's the egg-shaped iVoice 2. 49$

For the week of September 16, Apple has dumped a huge new catalog of music on the iTunes Music Store, including lots of new Rounder album, making Rounder the first independent label to appear on the service. Now you can enjoy the sounds of The Klezmer Conservatory Band, Zydeco Shootout at El Sid O's, or an album of Czech Polkas -- provided you're in the USA since European access is still delayed.
